Draft FAQs
Frequently asked questions about the draft...
This information is intended to help our players understand how they may, or may not, have been placed on a particular team. This information may also aid you when you are making any “special requests” with your registration.
When will the draft take place?
After registration and in the week before the first game.
Who will be at the draft?
Your FWHA board members, and 2 people per team to represent the team - either the team sponsor and a helper or 2 volunteers assigned as team representatives.
There are absolutely no COACHES allowed. Coaches are volunteers and not all teams have coaches. While their input may be invaluable on the bench, we are going to leave the team draft to the players.
How will the board know who is a team sponsor and who is a team rep?
If you are a sponsor or a rep, you can indicate that on your registration. If you are interested in being a team rep, please contact a sponsor and ask them to designate you as such or contact a board member and let them know of your willingness to volunteer as a team rep.
What is the process for picking players at the draft?
The system is based off fantasy league drafts.
All players have a rating that has been determined from the previous season. If you are new, we have a rating that indicates that as well.
Team reps/sponsors will draw numbers for picking order.
Players will be picked by that rep/sponsor and we will make our way from “A” skaters (high skill level) to “E” skaters (new skaters).
The players picked by each rep/sponsor will be visible to all.
Once we have picked we will then try to honor “special requests”.
Is there any player who is guaranteed a spot on a particular team?
In recent years we have allowed reps to submit a "core 6" prior to the draft. The 6 includes the reps, sponsor, and anyone else chosen by the reps and agreed to by that particular player.
Can I request to be on a team with a friend?
Yes! This is what we mean by “special request”.
You are allowed 1 reciprocal request only.
This means player Gladys writes “Gladys would like to play on a team with Rosie”. Rosie then writes “Rosie would like to play on a team with Gladys”. That is a reciprocal request.
How will goalies be chosen?
Goalies are normally assigned by the board to balance the skill level of the teams.
